Chapter 8: Warning: Google is censoring trans and LGBTQ youth content at YouTube
Let’s talk about one of the largest corporations in the world: Google is censoring trans and LGBTQ youth content and labeling it as “shocking content.” I know this is true because I just received a “Notice of Disapproval” from Google for my promoted trans and LGBTQ youth video on YouTube. Now that Google has been found guilty of being a monopoly, it is more important than ever to explore things like censorship at this media giant.
A week ago, I uploaded a video to YouTube called “Not Losing You: a national trans and LGBTQ youth PSA on GoFundMe.” I clicked on the ‘promotions’ tab submitting it to Google, paying $100 to promote it on YouTube. To my surprise, I received this “Notice of Disapproval” saying that the video contained “shocking content.” ... Shocking content? Really? Google defines “shocking content” in part as violent language, physical trauma, or depictions of body fluids or just plain “disgusting imagery.” My video didn't contain any of that. It’s mostly just me talking in front of a Trump sign, and a report from The Washington Post about anti-LGBTQ hate crimes rising against trans and gay youth in states with anti-LGBTQ legislation.
